Before we dig into them, we’re going to go over the symptoms of your catalytic converter failing. All of these techniques can be performed at home with a basic set of tools for a minimal cost. In this article, we’re going to discuss different methods of how to stop catalytic converter rattling noise. Since it can be an expensive part to replace, you may be trying to figure out ways to quiet a rattling catalytic converter until you can manage to get it to a mechanic. When it does, you can experience a myriad of symptoms, including loss of performance, your check engine light coming on, and annoying rattling noises coming from underneath your vehicle. However if the front one which is now mounted in the back starts to show a fluctuation, then the cat may be at fault. After many thousands of miles, a catalytic converter will come to the end of its lifespan. If the fluctuation in the rear O2 sensor which is now mounted in front, continues to persist, I'd gather that sensor is no good. Anyway assuming that this is also the case for your 4Runner, you can swap the O2 sensors and take another OBD reading. They have different part numbers because of the lead length. On my 97 4Runner, the two O2 sensors are identical. I know I am not helping much here but some thoughts anyway.Ĭertainly keep us posted on what you learn. I'll go back to OBD and see what the tool says about the various operating parameters in the engine and whether they're within nominal or not at different engine loads. What I was trying to say is that if the catalytic converter has gone bad twice in 102K miles, then something is wrong in the engine and the failure of the cat is merely by-product of the primary issue.
